In a powerful display of solidarity and empathy, the Jewish community in Moscow came together in a heartfelt gathering to pray for the safety of Israel. The event was organized in response to the challenging situation unfolding in the Holy Land of Israel. Hundreds of people from diverse backgrounds gathered to offer their solidarity and prayers.
The initiative was spearheaded by Russia’s Chief Rabbi Berel Lazar, who, despite being unable to attend due to medical reasons, urged the community to unite in prayer. The gathering took place in the courtyard of the Jewish Tolerance Museum and Jewish Chesed Center in Moscow’s Marina Roscha neighborhood. Rabbi Boruch Gorin, spokesperson of the Federation of Jewish Communities in Russia, played a pivotal role in opening and emceeing the event.
The emotional ceremony included recitations of heartfelt prayers and acts of remembrance. “Kel Malei Rachamim” was recited by Rabbi Zalman Shimon Deren, Secretary of Russia’s Chief Rabbinate. Rabbi Alexander Boroda, President of the Federation of Jewish Communities in Russia, lit a candle in memory of those who lost their lives in the pursuit of sanctifying Hashem’s name. Rabbi Mordechai Weisberg, Director of the Jewish Communities in Moscow, led the congregation in a “Mi Sheberach” prayer for all the wounded and captives. Rabbi Michael Mishulovin of the Bolshaya Bronnaya Chabad House read chapters of Psalms.
This gathering of faith and solidarity was covered extensively by the general press. The Moscow police ensured the safety of all attendees in full coordination with the administration and Jewish community leaders.
In addition to the heartfelt prayers, Jewish institutions across Russia have increased their security measures over the past week, underscoring their commitment to the safety and well-being of their community members.
The Moscow Jewish community also paid homage to Lieutenant Colonel Eli-Amil Samuelov OBM, an alumnus of the FJC ‘Or Avner’ Jewish educational network, who tragically lost his life while serving in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). His family, currently sitting Shiva, received a letter of condolences from Chief Rabbi Berel Lazar.
Further demonstrating their unwavering support, the Shaarey Tzedek Chessed Center opened a call center for emotional support and physical assistance to families with loved ones in the Holy Land. Their ongoing relief activities for the general public have been expanded to provide aid in these trying times.
