Twenty-five YAHAD city leaders from across Russia and additional FSU countries participated in a unique eight-day seminar in Israel, organized in partnership with the Taglit (Birthright Israel) project. Designed to strengthen their professional skills and deepen their connection to Jewish life, the seminar, which took place between February 10–17, combined hands-on volunteering with intensive learning and leadership development – equipping participants to serve their communities more effectively upon returning home.

The group brought together representatives from Petersburg, Moscow, Yekaterinburg, Volgograd, Baku, Vladivostok, Nizhny Novgorod, Tomsk, Saratov, Voronezh, Omsk, and additional cities. Throughout the week, participants engaged in specialized training focused on participant outreach, recruitment fundamentals, and leadership growth. Each day integrated practical experiences with structured learning, allowing the leaders not only to acquire new tools but also to apply them in real-time settings.

Volunteering was a central component of the program from its opening days. The group visited Barzilai Medical Center, fulfilling the meaningful mitzvah of Bikur Cholim – visiting and supporting the sick. In Jerusalem, participants volunteered at a nursing home, spending time with elderly residents and offering companionship and assistance. They also took part in agricultural volunteering and helped prepare food packages for families in need, reinforcing the seminar’s emphasis on responsibility and care for others.

Shabbat was welcomed together at a Jerusalem hotel in an atmosphere of unity, spirituality, and inspiration, providing participants with a shared experience that strengthened both personal and professional bonds.

A special meeting with Mr. Gidi Mark, CEO of Birthright Israel, quickly turned into one of the inspiring highlights of the week. Addressing the group, he spoke about the critical role recruiters play within Taglit, emphasizing that today, more than ever, engaging young Jews in meaningful Jewish programs is essential to ensuring continuity and preventing assimilation. He expressed confidence that YAHAD leaders will play a significant role in bringing the “second million” participants to Taglit.

The seminar was made possible through the partnership of YAHAD, operating under the Federation of Jewish Communities (FJC) and directed by Rabbi Mendy Wilansky, together with the Taglit (Birthright Israel) project and Tlalim.
