World’s Largest Yiddish Magazine Highlights Passover in Russia

“And they Traveled to Rusland”: Moment Magazine, the world’s most popular Yiddish magazine, published a full-length supplement of the Jewish community rabbis and Chabad emissaries’ work throughout Russia and Siberia, and a 10-page interview with Rabbi Berel Lazar, the Chief Rabbi of Russia.

“Six Dramatic Days Including Shabbat in Siberia”- says the title on the cover of the Passover edition that was delivered to hundreds of thousands of loyal readers, telling all about the special journey on which the young and talented journalist Ari Weiser set out.

Several months before Passover, “Moment”- the well-known Yiddish newspaper, decided to bring the contemporary story of Russian Jewry to its readers, most of whom regularly read newspapers in Yiddish only, and were now exposed for the first time to the atmosphere of Yiddishkeit in the world’s largest country and its Chabad emissaries.

The highlight of the trip was an exclusive and fascinating conversation in the office of Russia’s Chief Rabbi Berel Lazar. The conversation spans about ten pages, in which the Rabbi recounts the early days of his activity when he was sent by the Rebbe, about the establishment of the many Jewish institutions, and gives eye-opening answers regarding education, outreach, leadership, connections, and more.

The author dedicates a special chapter with beautiful descriptions of his visit to Siberia, where he spent Shabbat with the Rabbi of Omsk Naftali Wilhelm, and then continued to Novosibirsk, the capital of Siberia, where he was hosted by the Rabbi Shneur Zalman Zaklas, who showed him the city’s Jewish infrastructure.

In between, the author also toured Moscow, the capital, where he interviewed various individuals, photographed, questioned, researched, and shared emotionally with his readers who had a fascinating read over Passover, opening before them a new world of the holy work done in Russia.
