The Federation of Jewish Communities (FJC) expresses its deep sorrow over the passing of Rabbi Moshe Hauer, Executive Vice President of the Orthodox Union (OU), who died on Shemini Atzeret at his home in Baltimore at the age of 64.
A distinguished Torah scholar and devoted communal leader, Rabbi Hauer was a steadfast supporter of the Jewish communities across the Former Soviet Union, particularly in Ukraine, where he played a critical role in supporting local rabbis and Chabad emissaries since the onset of the ongoing crisis.
Ordained at Yeshivas Ner Yisroel and holder of a Doctor of Talmudic Law, Rabbi Hauer also earned a Master of Science from Johns Hopkins University. He served for 26 years as Senior Rabbi of Bnai Jacob Shaarei Zion Congregation in Baltimore, where he became known for his compassionate leadership and dedication to children at risk and Jewish social services.
Since joining the Orthodox Union in 2020, Rabbi Hauer led with warmth, insight, and moral clarity, helping shape the OU’s global communal and policy outreach. His appreciation for Chabad’s global mission was evident in his writings and his frequent participation in the International Kinus Hashluchim, where he stood alongside leaders such as Rabbi Moshe Kotlarsky OBM, Russia’s Chief Rabbi Berel Lazar, Rabbi Dovid Mondshine of the Federation of Jewish Communities and the Or Avner Foundation, and Rabbi Shlomo Peles of the Jewish Relief Network Ukraine (JRNU).
In recent years, Rabbi Hauer played a vital role in organizing support for Ukrainian Jewry, overseeing major aid efforts that included the delivery of food, generators, and essential supplies to embattled communities. “Rabbi Hauer acted with genuine care, a broad heart, and a shining countenance,” said Rabbi Shlomo Peles. “He was in constant contact, always seeking ways to help and support the emissaries. His passing is a tremendous loss to the Jewish people.”
