The Jewish community of Moscow gathered in impressive numbers for a central Lag BaOmer celebration that brought together Jewish families from across the city in a display of unity and joy. The main event, held at the Shaarei Tzedek Chesed Center near the Marina Roscha synagogue, featured a traditional bonfire lighting ceremony led by Russia’s Chief Rabbi Berel Lazar.

The evening began with a meaningful evening service at the central synagogue, where Elazar Hillel Tzadik led the prayer and counting of the Omer. The young man’s participation held special significance as this marked the fourth yahrzeit of his father, Reb Ariel Tzadik, who was among the 45 people who tragically lost their lives during the Meron disaster in Israel four years ago.

Following the prayers, attendees proceeded in a festive march to the nearby Shaarei Tzedek Chesed Center grounds, which had been carefully prepared with ample seating and designated dancing areas. The community came together as Elazar Hillel Tzadik lit the ceremonial torch, a moment that evoked deep emotion as many remembered those lost in Meron.

As Rabbi Lazar held the torch aloft, the crowd broke into song celebrating Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, whose yahrtzeit is commemorated on Lag BaOmer. Live music from keyboard player Yitzchak Lifshitz and performances by the Cheder Menachem Choir, directed by Rabbi Menachem Mendel Markowitz, enhanced the atmosphere of joy and spiritual connection.

The central bonfire lighting was complemented by numerous smaller Lag BaOmer parades and events organized by Chabad Houses throughout Moscow’s neighborhoods, ensuring the holiday’s celebration reached Jews across the metropolitan area.

The following morning, children from Jewish schools across Moscow participated in a special parade held at the Jewish Museum and Tolerance Center. In keeping with the Lubavitcher Rebbe’s guidance, the children recited verses from Torah, joined in prayer, and engaged in educational activities honoring Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai’s legacy.
