On the yahrzeit of Rachel Imeinu, a new, elegant women’s mikvah was inaugurated in the southern Russian city of Sochi. The mikvah was established through the initiative of Chabad emissary and Chief Rabbi of Sochi, Rabbi Sholom Lazar, and his wife, Rebbetzin Hindi. Chief Rabbi of Russia, Rabbi Berel Lazar, honored the occasion with his presence, offering blessings and expressing admiration for the Jewish revival in the city.

Nestled between the Black Sea and the Caucasus Mountains, Sochi is one of Russia’s most visited cities, attracting millions of tourists year-round. Its natural beauty and direct flight connections from Israel make it a popular destination among Jewish and Israeli travelers. Many are drawn not only by its scenic offerings but also by the vibrant Jewish community that has flourished in recent years.

The new mikvah stands in the heart of Sochi’s Jewish community, which Rabbi Sholom and Rebbetzin Hindi Lazar have been cultivating for the past six years. Under their leadership, the city now boasts an active synagogue, regular Torah classes, youth and educational programs, and community events aimed at strengthening Jewish identity for locals and visitors alike.

The mikvah’s construction was made possible thanks to the generous support of Mr. Alexander Gavrilov, a devoted friend of the community who saw the project as both a responsibility and a mission. Additional support came from other community members and partners.

At the inauguration, Rabbi Berel Lazar affixed the mezuzah at the mikvah entrance and addressed the community, emphasizing the spiritual importance of a mikvah in Jewish life: “The establishment of a mikvah is a cornerstone of Jewish continuity and sanctity. A community that builds a mikvah is building the essence of its Jewish soul.”

The ceremony coincided with a regional gathering of female Chabad emissaries from across Russia and the former Soviet Union, many of whom participated in the event, adding a profound sense of unity and inspiration.

The mikvah opening marks another milestone in the ongoing growth of Jewish life in Sochi, offering a sacred space where purity, light, and Jewish warmth come together at the heart of a blossoming community.
