In commemoration of what has become the International Holocaust Remembrance Day recognized the world over on Jan. 27, Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk and many members of parliament joined Rabbi Jonathan Markovitch of Kiev in solemn prayer.
Six million Jews perished in the Holocaust at the hands the Nazis and their collaborators.
Following the service, the prime minister and the rabbi met to discuss the current security of Ukraine’s Jewish community, especially after a rocket barrage that hit Mariupol on Shabbat morning, in addition to Israeli-Ukrainian relations.
During a tour of a display on the Holocaust at the National Museum of the History of the Great Patriotic War (1941-45) in Ukraine’s capital of Kiev, the rabbi—the son of Auschwitz survivors—shared his family’s story of survival with the premier.
