OSWIECIM (UrduPoint News / Sputnik – 13th May, 2019) Russian Chief Rabbi Berel Lazar called on believers on Sunday to battle anti-Semitic sentiment with love and good deeds, while speaking at the site of the former Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp in Poland.
Lazar joined on Sunday the March of the Living event at the Auschwitz-Birkenau museum situated on the site of the former same name death camp in the Polish city of Oswiecim. The event, attended by Russian students, was organized by the Federation of Jewish Communities of Russia.
“Our answer to what we saw here [at the Auschwitz Museum] is to show that we can defeat this evil only with love and good deeds,” Lazar said.
Auschwitz-Birkenau facility was the largest German Nazi concentration and extermination camp. It has become a symbol of terror, genocide and Holocaust. No one knows exactly how many people were killed in the camp. Some historians put the number of Jews exterminated at the camp at 1.1 million.
The camp was liberated by the Soviet Army back in 1945. A museum created on the site was later included on the UNESCO World Heritage Site list.
